Superspikes
FAQ
What is special about a Manson Superspike?
The
Superspike uses a screw-in tip of specially
selected alloy steel. This is much harder than mild
or stainless steel and gives longer life and
greater security.
How long is a longer life?
Unsolicited
comments from bass players indicate a use of 5
years or more before the point needed sharpening.
Cello players, with their lighter instruments,
claim 2 ˝ to 3 years of useful life. Note: Both
claims depend on type of floor but are typical for
professional use.
What is the "spare point" all about?
The
screw-in point is the heart of the
Manson Superspike, and
although new points are available by return of
post, this may not be soon enough for your next
concert. Most people choose the option of a fitted
spare point. Both the working and spare points are
screwed into the rod and have machined flat sides
so that they can be removed and replaced using a
small spanner (wrench).

Will a Manson Superspike fit my instrument?
Manson Superspikes are
individually made to order. Thus, the length you
require and the appropriate diameter is produced to
fit your instrument. The vast majority of
instruments fit standard diameters as follows:-
5/16 inch, 8 mm., 3/8 inch, 10 mm., and 5/8 inch.
This latter size being previously a wooden rod, is
replaced using an aluminium tube which can be
supplied polished or painted black. If you have
difficulties or find you have a non-standard size,
call us for more help.
How do I measure my existing spike?
This is
a very important question. A Micrometer or a
Vernier Caliper is the best tool for achieving the
required accuracy. Your dimension as measured will
most likely be one of the sizes listed above (See
"Will a Manson Superspike fit my instrument?"). If
you have difficulties or find you have a
non-standard size, call us for more help.
